The buffet, called the Lido Market, is a relaxed alternative for casual nights, and the included dining is genuinely satisfying without paying a cent extra.

For a special evening, the Pinnacle Grill is the line's signature steakhouse and it's worth the splurge, as is the Asian-inspired Tamarind on ships that have it. If you're a food lover, look into whether a dining package makes sense for your sailing. I also recommend trying the afternoon tea at least once, because it's a charming, classic touch that fits the whole personality of Holland America.

Sea days on Holland America are made for slowing down. Between enrichment talks, the live music venues, the spa, and a quiet lounger with a book, you'll never be bored even though nothing is frantic. Each evening you'll get the next day's program, and I like to circle a couple of things, maybe a lecture and a music set, so I have anchors without overscheduling myself.

On port days, Holland America calls at some truly scenic destinations, and in places like Alaska the smaller ship size can mean lovely close-up views.
